What to Do in the First 14 Days After a Florida Car Accident
Even a minor car accident can turn your day into a major headache. You have insurance calls, vehicle repairs, and paperwork to deal with, all while trying to figure out how your body feels after the accident. For Florida drivers especially, there is another important detail to keep in mind: the first 14 days matter when it comes to accessing potential Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical benefits.
Understand Florida's 14-Day PIP Rule
Under Florida Statute § 627.736, an injured person must receive qualifying initial services and care within 14 days after a motor vehicle accident to access PIP medical benefits. A licensed chiropractic physician is among the healthcare providers who may provide qualifying initial care.
So, what could those PIP benefits include? Generally, PIP medical benefits provide reimbursement for 80% of reasonable expenses for medically necessary covered services, subject to Florida law and the terms of your policy.
There are also different benefit limits to understand. Florida law provides up to $10,000 in PIP medical benefits in certain circumstances when an authorized provider determines that an emergency medical condition exists. When an authorized provider determines there is no emergency medical condition, medical benefits are limited to $2,500.
Chiropractic physicians can provide qualifying initial care within that 14-day window, but Florida law does not include chiropractors among the providers authorized to make the emergency medical condition determination required for the higher PIP medical-benefit level.
There is a lot of insurance language packed into those few paragraphs, but the practical takeaway is simple: do not wait until day 15 to receive an evaluation or other qualifying initial care. For questions about your individual coverage or claim, contact your insurer or a qualified legal professional.
Pay Attention to Delayed Symptoms
How your body feels immediately after an accident may not be how it feels several hours or days later. You might begin noticing:
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Back pain or soreness
- Headaches
- Shoulder discomfort
- Numbness or tingling
- Dizziness or fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
These symptoms may be associated with injuries caused by the sudden forces of a collision. That is one reason an appropriate evaluation can be worthwhile even when the accident seemed relatively minor.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if you experience warning signs after a possible head injury, including a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, weakness or numbness, slurred speech, increasing confusion, unusual behavior, or difficulty waking.
Why Consider an Early Chiropractic Evaluation?
After an accident, your car may be getting more attention than you are. We understand. Cars are expensive and tend to be fairly dramatic when something gets dented.
But your health deserves attention, too. At Evolve Chiro Care, an early chiropractic evaluation gives us an opportunity to discuss what happened, learn about your symptoms and health history, and evaluate concerns such as neck pain, back pain, stiffness, and changes in mobility.
From there, we can recommend appropriate next steps and develop a personalized chiropractic care plan.
What Should You Bring?
Between insurance paperwork and everything else happening after a crash, gathering documents can feel like one more chore. Do not delay appropriate care because you cannot find every piece of paperwork.
Bring what you have, which may include:
- Government-issued photo ID
- Health and auto insurance information
- Claim number and adjuster information, if available
- Police crash report or report number
- Photos of vehicle damage or the accident scene
- Emergency room, urgent care, or imaging records
- Current medications and relevant health history
- Notes about when symptoms started and how they affect daily activities
It can also help to keep a simple timeline on your phone. Note when symptoms started, where you feel discomfort, and whether anything has changed since the accident. You do not need a color-coded spreadsheet.
Do Not Let Day 14 Sneak Up on You
After an accident, two weeks can pass surprisingly fast. While you are handling repairs, insurance calls, work, and everyday responsibilities, do not let your own health fall to the bottom of the list.
Pay attention to new or changing symptoms, seek emergency care when necessary, and remember that Florida requires qualifying initial care to be received within 14 days for potential PIP medical benefits.
